Can I count on Invisalign?

So many people needing braces are turning to Invisalign, and it’s understandable why. The appliance, comprising translucent plastic, has the potential to replace the notion of metal braces entirely.

So if it’s the next best thing since sliced bread, why aren’t more people using the appliance?

Invisalign versus braces

When comparing conventional braces and Invisalign, it’s a tight race. While it’s true that Invisalign is the perfect device for self-conscious individuals, its removable nature can be inconvenient because the only thing you can consume with it in place is water. The benefits and pitfalls to both, which can also be discussed by you with your orthodontist, will be explored further.

 Appearance

When considering braces, a top priority for most is how the device looks. For those not wanting to draw attention to themselves, having metal affixed to their teeth is bound to cause anxiety.

That said, we’re picturing archetypal braces created over thirty years ago, not straightening aids that are available today. The metal brackets used are smaller, slick, and while still noticeable, far more discreet than before. Ceramic fixed braces are also on the market, if you can’t stand the idea of wearing metal, these are made from porcelain and tooth coloured.

Inarguably, Invisalign’s top feature is its invisible appearance. Made from high-quality translucent plastic, people won’t know you’re wearing a straightening device while you interact with them.

Functionality

By and large, metal braces have no restrictions in the dental issues that it can repair. Treatment might be lengthy, but you’ll come out of treatment with straight teeth and a desirable smile.

On the other hand, Invisalign can’t fix all issues, especially for complex or unique cases. Opting for these appliances if your malocclusion is severe will result in a longer treatment time or the device only partially straightening your teeth.

Convenience

Standard braces can be inconvenient in several ways. You have to adapt your cleaning regime to remove food trapped under your wires, and even then it’s not guaranteed that you’ve removed all harmful plaque. By straightening your teeth with modern braces, your oral health could suffer if you aren’t thorough with brushing and flossing.

Its permanent position in your mouth means you can’t enjoy the food you used to, because chewy and sticky things could damage your straightening aid.

Having the freedom to remove your device at a moment’s notice is both an advantage and a disadvantage for the reasons explained below.

Removing your device means you won’t have to change your cleaning regime. However, you must brush your teeth and gums thoroughly. Additionally, you can remove the device while you eat, saving the embarrassment and frustration of catching food in your wires.

That said, removing the device can be inconvenient because you must remember to remove it before eating and drinking anything except for water. Forgetting might result in you cracking the device and having to replace it out of pocket. On top of potentially damaging it, having to continually remove it might result in its misplacement. To prevent this happening, consider purchasing a pouch to store it when you’re not using it.
