10 Reasons Why You Should Start Getting Enough Sleep

1. Poor sleep is linked to weight gain.
People who get adequate sleep weigh significantly less compares to those who don’t get enough sleep.

An extensive review study showed that both children and adults who have shorter sleep duration were 89% and 55%  more susceptible to developing obesity, respectively.

2. Good sleepers are found to consume fewer calories.
Sleep deprivation has been shown to affect an individual’s appetite and calorie consumption. It is found to be disruptive in the appetite hormones’ daily fluctuation which is believed to cause a poor regulation of one’s appetite.

Getting less than seven hours of sleep daily puts you in a position of greater risk of a stroke, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses.

6. Glucose metabolism is affected by how much sleep you’re getting.
Poor sleeping habits also have a negative effect on your blood sugar. A study involving healthy young men showed that getting only four hours of sleep for 6 days straight has caused prediabetes symptoms in the participants.

PubMed published a review connecting sleep and depression. In it, they found that 90% of those going through depression have complained about not getting enough sleep.

It is found that people who regularly sleep for less than seven hours a day are three times more likely to catch a cold compared to those who get at least eight hours of shut-eye a day.

Inflammation in your body is also greatly affected by poor sleep quality. It is known to trigger unpleasant markers of cell damage and inflammation.

Researchers and experts recommend sleep evaluation to determine the possibility of long-term inflammatory concerns in individuals.

10. Sleep affects how you respond socially and emotionally.
Lack of sleep reduces your ability to interact socially and respond emotionally. Researchers believe that it can cause people to fail to process emotional information and react appropriately in social settings.
